Things are sorting themselves out
As we reach the midway point — crazy, I know! — the Mountain West very slowly starting to figure things out. One thing that seems closer to being a reality than not is that San Jose State is not all that good this year.
A step down from its conference championship year in which the Spartans went undefeated was to be expected, because, ya know, going undefeated is very difficult. There are other issues at hand for San Jose State and some of it is just bad luck and it starts with the injury to quarterback Nick Starkel.
Starkel being out hurts the quarterback depth as the variety of backups have not done well, plus losing wide receivers like Tre Walker and Bailey Gaither is starting to be a bid deal.
The defense also has not played as well as last year and that includes reigning 2020 Mountain West defensive player of the year Cade Hall. Hall so far this year has just 2.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. In last year’s abbreviated season of seven game he played in, Hall had 12 TFL’s and 10 sacks.
So, there are a lot of things not going well for San Jose State and that is why they dropped in the polls again this week.
At the top, there are just two teams earning a first-place vote and they are San Diego State and Nevada. Wyoming’s first-place vote was displaced after it fell to Air Force this past weekend in its first loss of the season.
