Colorado State holds the top spot

Nine MWWire writers took part in the poll this week. It’s a bit different considering a number of teams didn’t play, including Colorado State. Let’s look where things stand entering the second-to-last week of the non-conference season.

1.) Colorado State – 99 points

Colorado State remains ranked, sliding into 21st in the AP Top 25 poll. However, Colorado State’s next scheduled game comes on December 28th at New Mexico. COVID protocols canceled the Tulsa game last week and the upcoming game against highly-ranked Alabama. 

2.) San Diego State – 83 points

The Aztecs added a marquee win over St Mary’s in Phoenix last weekend. The issue was the lack of scoring aside from Matt Bradley, who scored 22 against the Gaels. The surprise scorer was Adam Seiko, adding 12 points with four made three-pointers. The final Divison One opponent of the non-conference comes on Wednesday, hosting Toni Rocak and the UCSD Tritons.

3.) Utah State – 74 points

The Aggies split a pair of games away from home this week. Beginning the week with a convincing win in Ogden over a really good Weber State squad, despite Justin Bean’s season-low two points. Sharpshooting guard Steven Ashworth added a career-best 27 points. The week’s second game didn’t go Utah State’s way, as the Iowa Hawkeyes had no issues with the Mountain West opponent. Potential All-American Keegan Murray dropped 35 points in the convincing win.

The Aggies host Portland State, who’ve only beat one D1 opponent this season.

4.) Wyoming – 73 points

The Cowboys’ 9-1 record from last week stands pat after an idle week. Wyoming plays three games this week no matter what, playing in the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii. They open the tournament facing a struggling Stanford squad before playing either Northern Iowa or Liberty. They’ll get tested no matter who Jeff Linder’s team ends up playing.
