Week 1 recaps and highlights
Thursday, August 29
Northern Colorado at San Jose State
10 p.m. ET, TV: None | Get Tickets
Line: San Jose State -10.5 | Staff Picks
Final Score: San Jose State 35, Northern Colorado 18
Recap: (Jeremy Mauss) There was not going to be an FCS surprise this time around as the Spartans easily won 35-18 over the Bears. Josh Love had a solid game completing 21 of 31 passes to ten different receivers, including a pair of touchdowns, in the win.
However, the player of the game had to be Ethan Aguayo. He had 20 total tackles, 11 solo, two tackles for loss and a sack.
There was no TV or streaming but here are a few highlights.
Friday, August 30
Utah State at Wake Forest
8 p.m. ET, TV: ACC Network | Get Tickets
Line: Wake Forest -3.5 | Staff Picks
Final Score: Wake Forest 38, Utah State 35
Recap (Matthew Kenerly): The Aggies had their chances in Winston-Salem, but red zone ineffectiveness and a surprisingly leaky secondary doomed Utah State in a close loss to the Demon Deacons.
Jordan Love completed 33-of-48 passes for 416 yards and three touchdowns, but he also threw three interceptions and could have had at least two or three more. David Woodward had 24 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles, but USU allowed Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman to throw for 401 yards, the first time USU allowed over 400 yards since the 2013 Mountain West championship game, including the game-winning pass to Kendall Hinton.
Purdue at Nevada
9:30 p.m. ET, TV: CBS Sports Network | Get Tickets
Line: Purdue -10.5 | Staff Picks
Final Score: Nevada 34, Purdue 31
Recap (Brandon Blake): The Nevada Wolf Pack came back from a 24-7 halftime deficit, and a 31-14 hole with six minutes left in the third quarter, to defeat the Purdue Boilermakers, 34-31. The miraculous comeback was capped off when freshman kicker Brandon Talton kicked a 56-yard field goal as time expired to give Nevada the walk-off win over Purdue. Carson Strong in his debut, completed 30 of 51 passes for 295 yards and threw three touchdown passes.
Running back Toa Taua ran for 56 yards on 12 carries and caught eight passes for 56 yards. Elijah Cooks caught seven passes for 60 yards and scored two touchdowns in the win.
But the main thing folks will be talking about long after this game is the freshman Talton’s game-winning field goal to propel the Wolf Pack over the Boilermakers.
Colorado vs. Colorado State (Denver)
10 p.m. ET, TV: ESPN | Get Tickets
Line: Colorado -13.5 | Staff Picks
Final Score: Colorado 52, Colorado State 31
Recap (Josh Fredlund): The first half of the Rocky Mountain Showdown looked like CSU was going to turn the corner and then the second half showed… well, maybe not. The Rams defense once again could not give the offense a chance, allowing 475 yards at 7.9 yards per play.
Player of the game honors go to freshman wide receiver Dante Wright (Is it too late to change my freshman of the year pick?). He finished with three carries for 59 yards to go along with four catches for 72 yards and two total scores.
