The college football season is nearly over with just one game left with TCU taking on Georgia in the national title game on Monday night.
The Mountain West finished last week and now let’s do some reflecting and rank how these bowl games played out.
We have rankings from a few other outlets plus our own ranking of how awesome or not-so-awesome some of these bowl games were.
7. First Responder Bowl, Memphis 38, Utah State 10
This game was a tough one for the Aggies as they had an injury to starting quarterback Cooper Legas went down early with an injury. Bishop Davenport came in and he just couldn’t get the offense going. Him being a freshman — despite having started games earlier. this year — was a reason he struggled.
The defense didn’t perform well either in this game and the Tigers just ran away with this one early and often by trailing 24-3 at the half.
6. LA Bowl Fresno State 29, Washington State 6
From a competitive standpoint, this game was not all that close but for Fresno State fans this was a solid performance. The Bulldogs had very few issues against the Cougars with a great defensive effort and an above avearge Bulldogs offense.
5. Armed Forces Bowl Air Force 30, Baylor 15
This was a very, very, very cold game. It looked great and close game as the first half the scoring being 9-7 in favor of Air Force. The Falcons had a great start to the second half by scoring 14 points. Then the fourth quarter was aided by what seemed like every single carry by Brad Roberts in that period to seal the game.
4. Potato Bowl Eastern Michigan 41, San Jose State 27
This game had a lot going on for itself with multiple lead changes that made this game exciting for the majority of the outcome. The crucial failed 4th-and-goal attempt that directly led to an Eastern Michigan touchdown turned the tide for this game.
3. Hawaii Bowl Middle Tennessee 25, San Diego State 23
This game was all over the place. San Diego State got off to a 14-0 lead, they had barely any rushing attack with 55 yards and quarterback Jalen Mayden had three interceptions.
The lack of running game really is what did in the Aztecs, their longest run was registered by a defender in Garrett Fountain for a gain of 27 yards on a fake punt. Interceptions and settling for field goals did in the Aztecs.
2. Frisco Bowl Boise State 35, North Texas 32
A new coaching staff for North Texas felt like this game would have ended up in a Boise State blowout. Instead, this one saw an explosive third quarter with teams going back and forth. The Broncos defense had two stops in the fourth quarter up three to seal the win and get head coach Andy Avalos his first bowl victory as the Boise State head coach.
1. Arizona Bowl Ohio 30, Wyoming 27 (OT)
Any game that goes to overtime will be at the top of this list. The Wyoming defense did a solid job by holding the Bobcats to three field goals in this game. The Cowboys offense was not there with the running game using first-time players like Jordon Vaughn who had a good outing with 67 yards and two scores.
Overall, the quarterback play by Andrew Peasley was just average and he had to find a slew of new receivers to catch the ball. There was no real cohesiveness to that offense.
In overtime, the Wyoming offense did its thing by scoring just a field goal and for the third time all game, the defense gave up a touchdown.
