Ranking the players of the year this week
This week there was a real fight at the top of the ticket for the No. 1 spot. Of the seven players nominated, five received a first-place vote. This was the closest race all season long for the players of the week.
This week there was a pair of quarterbacks, three running backs, a wide receiver and one special teams player. There was no consensus at any of the seven players to vote for as the minimum votes was four in the one through seven poll.
What we are saying, is that this week had tough decisions to make.
7. Trey Smith, RB, Wyoming – 1 Point
Filling in again admirably for the injured Xazavian Valladay with another 100-yard plus performance plus a touchdown, but that effort was not enough to help Wyoming from losing to a previously winless New Mexico team.

6. Jordan Byrd, KR/RB, San Diego State – 2 points
Byrd made most of his success in the return game with one punt return for a touchdown that went for a long touchdown and he had another return that set up San Diego State with a short field which led to more points.

5. Bobby Cole, RB, New Mexico – 3 points
The Lobos earned their first win of the year and did so by going all the way down to its fifth-string quarterback. To the rescue was running back Bobby Cole who had a career day with 131 rushing yards, plus two catches for 53 including a touchdown.
4. Tyler Nevins, RB, San Jose State – 4 points
The running game finally came alive for San Jose State as two backs had a huge day but it was Tyler Nevins who led the backfield. In the win over Hawaii, he rushed for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns for one of the best running back performances of the weekend.
3. Tory Horton, WR, Nevada – 5 points

The true freshman had a big day with three touchdowns on just five catches in Nevada’s win over Fresno State. He not only was scoring touchdowns but his five receptions accumulated 148 yards. Horton went for big yardage every time he touched the ball.
2. Jake Haener, QB, Fresno State – 6 points
Haener was unable to outduel Nevada. His yardage was a career-high with 485 yards but his two passing and one amazing rushing score was not enough. It was enough to stick him No. 2 this week in our top player countdown.
1. Carson Strong, QB, Nevada – 7 points
This performance put him over the top for the season with Strong’s amazing performance with not just 354 yards and five touchdowns in the win over Fresno State. The five scores were the most Mountain West quarterback threw all season long.
