We’ve reached the halfway point of the 2020 Mountain West football season, kinda sorta. With Covid cancellations and the potential of out-of-conference games with the Pac-12 being added now, who really knows.
All I know is the AP Top 25 is showing the conference no damn respect, and it’s a travesty. I’ll save that for another time, though.
Let’s just get to the picks, the few left after three games (San Jose State vs. Fresno State, Wyoming vs. Utah State, Colorado State vs. UNLV) were cancelled.
(NOTE: All lines via BetMGM as of Thursday)
NEW MEXICO @ AIR FORCE -7.5 ; O/U 55.5 ; 6:30 P.M. PT (FRIDAY)
Lemme tell you a few things about Rocky Long.
He was a triple-option quarterback in college, and he has A LOT of experience facing triple-option teams as a coach. He shifts his usual 3-3-5 defense to a special package with four linebackers, and he typically fares well.
Whether it’s Air Force in decades of Mountain West play, or multiple games against Army and Navy, Long’s teams have historically dominated triple-option teams. He and his protege Danny Gonzales are gonna have their squad ready, whereas Air Force is likely to be a little rusty after having multiple games cancelled.
Don’t be afraid to sprinkle a little on the Lobos moneyline.
The Pick: New Mexico +7.5 – Bet on this at BetMGM
Bonus Pick: Under 55.5

SAN DIEGO STATE -1.5 @ NEVADA ; O/U 46.5 ; 12:30 P.M. PT
Nevada is off to a hot start, and arguably should be ranked #24 or #25, but the AP voters are idiots. Carson Strong is a STUD, and Romeo Doubs is very deserving of being recently added to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List.
That being said, the Wolf Pack struggled with New Mexico last week, a team they should’ve handled easily.
After a tough loss to San Jose State, the Aztecs bounced back with an easy win over Hawaii. Their offense is getting into a groove with Greg Bell leading the rushing attack, and their defense should be able to handle Nevada after seeing New Mexico hold them to a season-low in points.
I think Brady Hoke is better suited to get his boys ready for this big game, which is now nationally televised on CBS this weekend. Gimme the Aztecs.
The Pick: San Diego State -1.5 – Bet on this at BetMGM

BOISE STATE -14 @ HAWAII ; O/U 62.5 ; 8 P.M. PT
After their hiccup against BYU, Boise bounced back in a big way last week. The Broncos dominated Colorado State.
With Hank Bachmeier back under center, and multiple players recovering after missing time due to Covid, Boise appears to be back in form.
I’m not sure Hawaii has enough to hang with Boise here, even if it is on the island. I like what Todd Graham is doing in the 808, but I think he’s gonna need a couple years to get them back into conference championship contention.
Broncos win big.
