The two big storylines in this game are that BYU is possibly starting true freshman quarterback Zach Wilson over the senior Tanner Mangum, and the other is that a win for the Warriors will get them to be bowl eligible at 7-1 (Hawaii plays 13 games so they need seven to get to the post season) to clinch at least a Hawaii Bowl bid.
Hawaii had its own quarterback issues with Cole McDonald sitting out the Wyoming game with an undisclosed injury, but all signs point to him starting against the Cougars.
This game does have BYU as a 12.5-point favorite which seems like a lot since the Cougars have not been able to score a lot of points and they are going up against a prolific offense in Hawaii. The Warriors have not faced an extremely tough schedule and this BYU defense will be one of the better ones it has faced and on yards per play and per game basis are the second toughest.
Hawaii needs to keep McDonald upright against guys like Corbin Kaufusi on the BYU side to be successful. The Warriors offensive line is not protecting McDonald all that well and, in fact, are one of the worst lines in sacks allowed per game.
The Warriors defense has struggled and probably will a little bit against BYU, but a combination of a true freshman quarterback potentially getting his first start, the Cougars thin at running back and receivers that aren’t all that reliable could mean a Hawaii win against its old WAC foe.
