The Mountain West has invaded Las Vegas for the conference tournament with the first day featuring the opening round games between the No. 6 through No. 11 seeded teams.
With the conference looking to earn six bids to the NCAA Tournaments, there could be a team playing on Wednesday that makes the field.
The two teams that must win to have a chance are New Mexico (less likely) and Colorado State (more likely). Both teams have a great NET rating with the Lobos at No. 28 and the Rams are No. 36.
Colorado State has played 12 Q1 games with a 5-7 record and New Mexico is 2-7 in those games and has a Q4 loss this year which doesn’t help.
Neither can afford to lose their games today to keep their NCAA Tournament berth alive. Even with Colorado State with an average nine seed in Bracket Matrix, they are far from a sure thing and at the very least must top San Jose State.
FIRST ROUND, MARCH 13
All first round games streamed on Mountain West Network
GAME 1: (9) Fresno State vs. (8) Wyoming, 11 a.m. PT/noon MT
This game will be a little different from the last time out but the Bulldogs just don’t have enough fire and energy to keep up with Wyoming in the second half. The Bulldogs know this could be Justin Hutson last game and it’s time for a new era of Bulldogs basketball. Wyoming has multiple players that can create and find their own offense which will be a key factor in this one. The Pokes should pull this one out in the second half.
GAME 2: (10) San Jose State vs. (7) Colorado State, 1:30 p.m. PT/2:30 p.m. MT
San Jose State is just not in a great place this season. They only have two conference wins, but you still can’t take them lightly. Colorado State needs this win to firmly secure their place in the NCAA Tournament. Look for the Rams to start fast and finish strong in this one.
GAME 3: (11) Air Force vs. (6) New Mexico, 4 p.m. PT/5 p.m. MT
With the Lobos seeking redemption after a narrow defeat and the Falcons aiming to maintain their winning momentum, sparks are guaranteed to fly.
The Falcons will try to slow the game down while Richard Pitinos Lobos will speed the pace up, in an up-tempo game, especially with Dent, Mashburn, and House on the court.
