Three Keys to a Wyoming Win
- Finding Accuracy
Sean Chambers didn’t have to show much in the passing game during his first season and the dominant play of Wyoming’s offensive line in their first game allowed the Cowboys to ground and pound against Mizzou. Texas State will spend the week trying to figure out a way to test Chambers’s arm.
The Cowboys’ ability to run will continue to give him easy passing attempts, but he will need to be much more accurate going forward if the Pokes are going to have a special season.
- Disruption on the defensive line
This key is a carryover from the first game. While the d-line was stout against the run, their inability to get pressure on Kelly Bryant allowed him to find receivers that were able to break open after solid coverage. Perhaps Wyoming was trying to keep Bryant in the pocket as much as possible or perhaps the pass rush struggled against a bigger Mizzou offensive line. In either case, Garrett Crall and company should create much more pressure against the Bobcats offensive line.
If the Cowboys are unable to find a pass rush in this game, it could be a major cause for concern moving forward.
- Show up on a mission
The win against Missouri was one of the bigger wins in Wyoming history. It’s not often that you get the chance to beat an SEC school on your home field, especially when you play in the Mountain West. The Cowboys played a great game and did a lot of good things last week, but they have a lot of areas where they can improve and need to get better if they want to make a run at a conference championship. With the Pokes receiving lots of national attention and even earning a vote in the AP poll, their focus going into the game will be a determining factor on how the result of the game.
Prediction
While the weather will be hot in San Marcos, 97 around kickoff, the 6 pm start should allow the game to be played during a time when the humidity is at a comfortable 25-30%. Texas State will likely force the Cowboys to pass more than 16 times but Sean Chambers and the passing game will be up to the challenge against a defense selling out to stop the run.
Defensively, Wyoming should be able to generate more of a pass rush than they did against Missouri and the secondary will have a major advantage. Texas State will play hard in Coach Spavital’s home debut but Wyoming will pull away in the second half. A strong Wyoming contingent watch the Pokes win 30-16.
