A new standout among a wealth of specialists.

Mountain West Wire’s 2020 postseason honors:

All-Conference Teams | Offensive Player of the Year | Defensive Player of the Year | Special Teams Player of the Year | Freshman of the Year | Newcomer of the Year | Coach of the Year | Coordinator of the Year

It’s never easy to replace any long-time contributor, especially at a position like kicker that is prone to such wild swings in production, but Wyoming’s John Hoyland made sure the Cowboys didn’t miss a beat on special teams after Cooper Rothe’s departure, earning our staff’s nod as Mountain West football’s freshman of the year.

The freshman from Broomfield, Colorado announced his presence in the opening weekend with four field goals against Nevada, including one that sent the game to overtime, then went on to lead the Mountain West in field goal percentage by connecting on 13-of-14 tries. That included going two-for-two on field goals from beyond 40 yards and Hoyland was a perfect 16-of-16 on extra points, as well.

Whatever comes next, Hoyland looks secure as part of the Mountain West’s bumper crop of excellent specialists.

Also received votes: Tavian Combs, safety, New Mexico; Jacob Gardner, offensive tackle, Nevada; Tory Horton, wide receiver, Nevada; Kyle Williams, wide receiver, UNLV; Levi Williams, quarterback, Wyoming
