Who steps up for the Rams?
Colorado State was the preseason favorite to win the regular season conference title. The Rams came just a game short of doing so. Now it’s onto the next season. Every team is 0-0 and every game is do or die. Now it’s time to see what the Rams are really made of.
The Rams are predicted to be a top eight seed in the NCAA tournament. If CSU can win the Mountain West tournament they could get as high as a five seed depending on the outcome of other conference tournaments. If the Rams want to have a better chance of making the second weekend, they’ll need to play a complete tournament.
David Roddy:
You just can’t ignore the Mountain West Player of the Year as voted by both the media and coaches. He averaged 19.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game. The only team to really contain Roddy all year was UNLV. Roddy needs to be on during all three games for the Rams. He can’t disappear as he has at times. The Rams need his 50/40/70 shooting split. His all around game is tough for any one player to guard. He’s too big for guards and he’s too fast for most forwards. Winning the conference tournment will cement Roddy’s status as a legend into CSU history for years to come.
Inside Offense:
The Rams are a good all-around shooting team. But they also rely on the three point shot a little too much. There have been a few games this year were that has burned them. They go away from trying to get inside looks and just rely on the deep shot. Against UNLV this hurt them a lot. However, when the Rams get an inside out game going, they are nigh unbeatable. CSU needs to get the ball inside either through the hands of Roddy, James Moors, or Dischon Thomas. If Colorado State can get a complete game going, they should be the favorites to win the MW tournament.

Third Star:
David Roddy and Isaiah Stevens are two of the best basketball players in the west, if not the whole country. And this causes teams to focus on those two. Roddy and Stevens will get their due, however a third man will need to step up. The Rams are at their best when another man steps up. Whether that be John Tonje (31 points against Oral Roberts), Chandler Jacobs (16 points against Boise State, 18 points against Wyoming), Kendle Moore (22 points against Nevada, 23 points against Utah State, 19 points against Boise State), or James Moors (10 points, 8 rebounds against San Diego State), someone needs to step up in order for the Rams to take the title.
