What Happens If New Mexico Fires Bob Davie?

Lobos could be on the hook for a lot of money.

A technicality could have the Lobos pay Davie if they part ways.

Bob Davie is currently the head coach for New Mexico and is currently facing a 30-day suspension for things he has allegedly done. There still seems a long ways to go in resolving what has happened between Davie’s behavior as the Lobos head football coach.

There is a chance that Davie may not be the head coach for the Lobos and after doing research and reading over the reports there are some outdated policies within the University of New Mexico which would not allow the Lobos to fire Davie for cause (listen to our podcast with Daniel Libbit for more on that).

However, Davie’s behavior is prompting changes to how the school handles any situations in the future that are in any similar to what Davie was alleged to have done.

Currently, Davie is under contract through the 2021 season and is owed $422,690 per season. That would come out to $1.69 million and a sum that would be hard for the University to swallow.

Via KOAT Action News:

KOAT legal expert John Day says if the school decides to end the football coach’s contract, they will need to prove “cause.” That means UNM would have to argue that Davie violated multiple policies. If they don’t succeed, Davie would be paid hundreds of thousands of dollars despite no longer working for UNM.

That is a big gamble to take because if the Lobos lose this case they would be paying for Davie to not coach while paying whoever their current coach might be.
