The Spartans return home after a dismal trip to Colorado Springs that saw the Spartans down by 23 at the half. Air Force shot 49% from the field and pulled down 25 rebounds, 10 of those offensive, to gain the 1st half advantage. San Jose State played better in the second half as they outscored the Falcons 43-34 and shot 47% compared to 29% in the first half but it was not enough as they would lose by 20. The Spartans who had been doing better with turnovers over the last 3 games, turned it over 16 times against the Falcons. If the Spartans want to pick up their first conference win they will have to limit the turnovers to single digits, shoot at least 45%, and limit the long stretches of no baskets. Against Air Force, San Jose was down by 3 when Air Force went on a 14-0 run which the Spartans were never able to recover from.
New Mexico enters Tuesday’s matchup after back to back losses against Fresno and Utah State. Against Utah State, the Lobos actually outshoot the Aggies but 18 turnovers caught up to New Mexico. The Aggies took a 3 point lead into the half and were able to extend it in the second half for the win. The Lobos are now 1-7 in conference play when losing at halftime. New Mexico should be able to easily outscore the Spartans if they do not keep them in the game with careless play and extra possessions. The Lobos could really use this win to gain some momentum as they have winnable games (at SJSU, vs Colorado State, vs Boise State, at Wyoming) to finish out conference play which could possibly propel them into a better position for the Mountain West Tournament.
