SJSU will have to wait to begin league play

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is causing some issues everywhere and it is hitting the sports world with a lot of postponements in a variety of leagues.

The Mountain West is no different with Colorado State and Nevada having to cancel games. Plus, the league has altered its forfeit policy and games will be attempted to be rescheduled and not a forfeit as people who are vaccinated are still testing positive, albeit with minor symptoms.

San Jose State is the latest team to have an outbreak and they will miss their first three conference games which were to be against Nevada (Dec. 29), at Utah State (Jan. 1), and against UNLV (Jan. 5) have been postponed. Games that cannot be rescheduled will be declared no contests.

The Spartans are off to a pretty good start under new head coach Tim Miles  who has them with a 6-5 record and doing better than expected. They will just have to wait an extra week to start conference play.

The odds of these games being rescheduled seem very low since the Mountain West did not build in an open week leading into the conference tournament like last year.

It will be interesting to see how the conference handles these multiple postponements that are very likely to be ultimately considered no contests because moving the conference tournament is not going to happen.
