San Diego State Tops Nevada To Advance To Mountain West Title Game

Nevada’s season is over

The first half was riddled with fouls and sloppy offense. Nevada shot 33% from the field while the Aztecs shot 38% from the field. San Diego State and Nevada had an astounding 27 fouls between them. While the refs could put down the whistles, both teams were forced to go deep into their benches as Steve Alford and Brian Dutcher both played 10 players.

Jordan Schakel led the Aztecs with eight points while 7’0 big man Warren Washington had 12 points for Nevada at the half. Nevada was also incredibly sloppy with the ball in the first half turning the ball over 12 times compared to only four TOs by San Diego State. The Aztecs took a 37-32 lead going into the locker rooms. 

After the break it was San Diego State’s game and the Aztecs never looked back. San Diego state was led by Mountain West Player of the Year Matt Mitchell who ended the contest with 24 points. Other Aztecs in double digits were Trey Pulliam, Jordan Schakel and Lamont Butler. San Diego State finished shooting an efficient 45% from the field and 43% from beyond the arch.

The Aztecs got more production from their bench with 16 bench points compared to 5 bench points from the Wolf Pack. Both teams combined for an astonishing 52 fouls in the entire game.

Nevada was led by Grant Sherfield who finished with 25 points on 6-15 from the field. Following Sherfield was Warren Washington with 19 points with Desmond Cambridge who finished with 17 points on an inefficient 4-15 shooting. Nevada finished the contest shooting 35% from the field and 5-21 from beyond the arch. The turnovers really hurt the Wolf Pack finishing with 14 turnovers leading to 12 Aztec points. 

San Diego State beats Nevada in Las Vegas 77-70 advancing to the final. Nevada goes back to Reno with the confidence of having all players return with the addition of key transfer players that will make an impact next season.

For San Diego State, the Aztecs advance to the championship game tomorrow night. San Diego State, who already have a spot locked in to the NCAA tournament, are fighting for a higher seed come selection Sunday.
