High expectations for Nevada start now.
The first Associated Press top 25 poll is out and the Nevada Wolf Pack come in ranked seventh and that means the expectations for the highly anticipated season begins now.
This is the highest preseason ranking since the 2005-06 team was slotted at 22 in the preseason AP poll.
The No. 7 ranking is the highest from the AP top 25 poll ever in over a decade when the Wolf Pack were 10th late in the 2006-07 season.
This Nevada team is coming off a Sweet 16 appearance and nearly made it to the Elite Eight but fell by a single-point to Loyola Chicago.
Nevada returns four starters and that includes last year’s, and preseason, player of the year in Caleb Martin.
People got a chance to see Nevada Sunday night in a scrimmage against Washignton. While it was a defeat for the Wolf Pack, it should be remembered that this was a scrimmage and a learning opportunity in the 91-73 loss.
Head coach Eric Musselman did not like what he saw in the scrimmage and questioned his teams ability overall. It was probably a mix of disappointment combined with hyperbole in seeing his team for the first time.
Nevada opens up the regular season at home against BYU on Nov. 6. This will be a tough test as the Cougars seemingly always win 20-plus games and they were predicted third in the West Coast Conference.
San Diego State is the only other Mountain West team to earn consideration by earning nine votes.
