Weir will finish out the season
Late Friday night, the University of New Mexico announced that Paul Weir and the school have mutually agreed to part ways at the end of the season.

It’s been a rough stretch for the Lobos for many reasons, but in Weir’s four seasons, the Lobos have not been able to muster two winning seasons while not eclipsing 19 wins in any of them. The 2020-21 season was definitely the straw that broke the camels back for both sides. Multiple players have opted out, the team is 6-14 and 2-14 in conference play and had to play a nomadic season with zero home games.
There’s a point where both sides don’t see a future with what’s currently going on, and that’s likely what led to the mutual agreement to move on.
The Lobos will finish off their season against Colorado State next week before heading to Vegas for the Mountain West tournament. Weir will coach the remainder of the season before AD Eddie Nunez looks for the next coach of the Lobos.
There’s going to be many names in the fray when it comes to who lands the job, but common names will no doubt some mix of Tim Miles, a familiar name to the Mountain West during his time at Colorado State.
Another name mentioned often is current South Carolina coach, Frank Martin due to his relationship with Eddie Nunez.
There will be many options, and this will be a long process and an interesting one to follow.
