It seems that if you’re a rival of New Mexico and you have a player with the last name Harris, you’ve got a good shot at beating the Lobos – especially in November and December.
In New Mexico’s game against New Mexico State last week, the Lobos couldn’t stop 5-9 Ohio State transfer A.J Harris, who finished the game with a career high 31 points on six for six three-point shooting.
This isn’t the first time a player named Harris from a rival team has torched the Lobos. In the 2017-2018 season, senior UTEP guard Omega Harris had a strong outing of his own against the Lobos on 9 of 11 shooting, which included hitting all four of his attempted three pointers. The Miners came out victorious in the contest in a season where they finished 11-22.
This week, the Miners don’t have the secret ingredient of a guard with the last name Harris to accompany their rival status.
They aren’t an especially deep team either, and have yet to secure a win over a Division 1 opponent. Having played a couple of solid division 1 teams thus far in New Mexico State and Arizona, the Miners haven’t made much of their opportunities and have lost by an average margin of 30 points. They also struggled against division 2 opponent Eastern New Mexico, but ultimately put away the Greyhounds 66-59.
Rodney Terry is a proven coach and things should improve at UTEP under the former Fresno State head man, but it will be difficult to go into The Pit and get a win over the cherry and silver this season. The Lobos simply bring too much depth and too fast a pace against a team with 4 players averaging at least 31 minutes.
New Mexico should come out hungry for a win, and will work hard to avoid a letdown against a struggling UTEP program for the second consecutive year.
