Colorado State looks to maintain their outside shot at the Mountain West title. Meanwhile the Lobos look for the season to end. Head Coach Paul Weir is out at the end of the season and New Mexico is looking forward towards the future.
Let’s be honest, New Mexico has just been plain awful this season. Only one player is averaging more than 10 points per game, Makuach Maluach at 15.7, and the Lobos as a whole are one of the worst shooting teams in the nation. They rank 303rd in FG% at 41.3%, 345th (out of 347 teams) in FT% at 59.4%, and 346th (out of 347 teams) in 3P% at 26.1%.
Colorado State is coming off a three week layoff and two wins over Air Force. This game is crucial in a weird way for the Rams. They must keep their focus and not look past the Lobos. They have to play their game and force New Mexico into making mistakes.
David Roddy and Isaiah Stevens are the keys for the Rams. Roddy is a MW POTY candidate averaging 16.4 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Stevens is right behind him at 15.1 points per game, while also chipping in 4.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.
The Lobos are going to have to slow the game down. Air Force was able to contain the Rams for the first half in both games before CSU was eventually able to run away with it. Maluach will also need someone to step up. He can’t do it all by himself. If the Lobos want to shock the conference, that next man up mentality has to show itself here.
Prediction: Colorado State 87, New Mexico 59
Next Up: The Rams will head to Reno to face Nevada on Friday, March 5th for one more shot at a potential resume boosting win before the conference tournament. The Lobos are off after this game until the Mountain West tournament.
