New Mexico Reportedly Hires Calvin Magee As New Offensive Coordinator
The former Arizona co-OC and RB’s coach is now running the Lobos offense

What offense will New Mexico run?
Arizona co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach Calvin Magee is expected to be the new offensive coordinator with New Mexico, there are now multiple outlets are reporting the hire.
Bob DeBesse was relieved of his duties as Lobos offensive coordinator a month ago after 2017 saw the offense take a step back and had its worst rushing output since DeBesse took over the offense back in 2012. Points per game were also the lowest under his tenure at 20 per game and 16 points down from 2016, so New Mexico made a change.
The uniqueness of the Lobos offense was all because of DeBessee, because remember head coach Bob Davie is a defensive-minded coach.
Magee coached under Rich Rodriguez which ran a spread attack that was a wide open attack with a mix off passing with four wide outs, used zone reads and elements in the option. So, one would think that the Lobos offense could be different? However, that is not likely to be the case as Davie said that the offense they have been running over the past few years will not change all that much.

The Wildcats offense averaged 41.3 points per game last year and with Magee assisting with the offense that unit averaged 34.95 points per game and only once was the offense under 25 points which was 24.8 in 2016.
One reason this is a good fit is because of what Magee had to work with in Khalil Tate at Arizona. The quarterback was a darkhorse Heisman candidate early in the season and ended up with 1,411 rushing yards and was the best in the FBS at 9.2 yards per carry. He also passed for 1,591 yards while completing 62 percent of his passes.
The talent will be less coaching in the Mountain West but there is an athletic quarterback with Tevaka Tuioti who showed sparks at time while while splitting reps with Lamar Jordan. With Jordan graduating that should give all of the reps to Tuioti.
