What will Lobos look for in a new OC?
The New Mexico Lobos are in the market for a new offensive coordinator as Calvin Magee — who also was the running backs coach — is leaving the program after just one season to join Ole Miss, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
Magee will join a staff that features his former head coach in Rich Rodriguez who is now the offensive coordinator for the SEC school. The only position currently listed as open for Ole Miss is the tight ends coach. Currently, Magee’s position with the new school has not publicly known.
“I hate to lose Calvin but this was a great opportunity for him and his family,” Lobos head coach Bob Davie said.
Magee’s wife, Rosie, is from the Mississippi area.
“I understand that it is a good opportunity for him and his family,” Davie added.
Davie also thanked him for what he has done in this year of transition.
As for who will be the next offensive coordinator, Davie said that he has some assistant coaches currently on staff that would be given an opportunity for the offensive coordinator position, but he would also be open the position to filled by someone not currently on staff as well.
Coach Davie brought Magee in last year to add elements of the spread offense with the triple offense (out of pistol formation) that the Lobos had been successfully executing under Coach Bob Debesse for five seasons.
Magee had come to New Mexico from the University of Arizona, where he served as associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator, as well as tight end and running backs coach under Rodriguez.
The Lobos finished the season 3-9, 1-7 in the MWC, ended the season 11th out of 12 teams in the MWC in total offense, averaging just 330.4 yards per game.
A lot the lack of success this year for the Lobos offensively was not only a new offensive coordinator but injuries to starting quarterback Tevaka Tuioti, against Liberty Sept 29th.
It’s unfortunate about this injury to Tuioti so early in the year. He looked not only explosive but played with a lot of poise on the road against Big 12 Wisconsin Badgers who were ranked 5th in the nation at the time.
The Lobos were never able to gain traction with this offense after Tuioti’s injury that happened so early in the season. The Lobos had to rely on backup quarterbacks Sheriron Jones and Colton Gerhart for the remainder of the year.
Davie was quoted by Albuquerque Journal as saying, “The direction of the offense schematically will continue in that same direction,” that Magee implemented.
So head coach Bob Davie’s challenge is to hire an offensive coordinator who fits the Lobos current personal.
An offensive coordinator that can come in and take the current personal and put together a game plan that gives the Lobos the best chance to win games.
