Six in a row.
Well, the University of New Mexico head football coach Bob Davie stressed how important it was for them to start strong. The Lobo offense did start strong with Quarterback Tevaka Tuioti helped direct a nine-play 90-yard touchdown drive.
New Mexico would be the first to strike, but it would be the Lobos lone touchdown of the game. Tuioti completed 4 of his 5 five passes with 20 yards rushing on read-option plays where he kept the ball after faking the dive.
The Lobo quarterback would finish the game with 237 yards passing on 19-26 passing. He looked laser-focused and showed the poise that Lobo fans have been waiting for all year.
The drive ended with running back Ahmari Davis 4-yard drive touchdown run. Andrew Shelley had the extra point kick to put the Lobos up 7-0 over the Wolf Pack.
That would be the only touchdown in the game for the Lobos. New Mexico was missing some potent receivers with Aaron Molina (foot), Jay Griffin IV (personal issues). Then it didn’t help with wide receiver Anu Somoye was injured in the first quarter with a hip injury.
They would go away with its sixth straight loss, and Nevada would come away with a 21-10 win against the Lobos.
This loss would eliminate any bowl eligibility for Bob Davies Lobos and would be the third consecutive year of a losing season.
This Lobo team is as good as their competitive intentions have been all year, they struggled with a lack of any consistency on both sides of the ball. On the offensive side of the ball, the inability to score touchdowns dropped passes in critical situations and overthrowing receivers in scoring position.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Lobo secondary is simply bad at covering good receivers on short or deep routes. Now they have had good solid play from their linebackers and front defensive tackles but that doesn’t seem to make a difference.
Coaches can draw up all the x’s and o’s, but at some point, college athletes have to step up and make plays.
This has not been the case for Bob Davie’s Lobos this year or its been few and far between, hence the Lobos win-loss record.
To say this has been one of the most grueling periods in Lobo football history would be an understatement.
Nevada (5-4, 2-3) like most of the Lobo opponents, the offense attacks this weak passing secondary that ranks dead last in FBS. The Lobos have struggled all year to stop an opponent with a good throwing quarterback and decent receivers.
Nevada quarterback Carson Strong took advantage of that with a strong performance for the Wolf Pack and ended the day completing 27-39 for 297 yards and two touchdowns.
Nevada wide receiver Romeo Doubs had a field day with the Lobo secondary with 167 yards receiving yards, one touchdown on 11 catches. The halftime score was only 14-7 and could have easily been 17-7 with a field goal or 21-7 with a touchdown.
So, Nevada, with the win, moves closer to being bowl eligible, and the Lobos are still struggling with the end of the season in sight.
It’s no secret to those in the college word that Davie is on the hot seat as far as being the head coach next year, and with each loss, the seat gets hotter.
