Grad transfer incoming?
New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales last week said that they are “actively hunting” for another quarterback to join the ranks, and he prefers a graduate transfer with FBS experience.
“We need someone with experience and a different look at that position,” Gonzales said. “We don’t have anybody that has game experience that has won at an elite level.
“We would prefer a grad transfer here by the summer in order for him to learn the offense. “I don’t think realistically you can bring a guy in just two weeks in the fall to learn this offense, if we’re going to have a grad transfer, he will be here by summer school.”
Junior quarterback Trae Hall has looked very sharp as of late running with the first-team offense, he has only four starts for the Lobos last season.
After Saturday’s scrimmage, Coach Gonzales felt Trae Hall was impressive saying, “Trae had a good day, I felt like the offense today looked good and he had a heck of a day.”

“The last three weeks the defense has had the upper hand but today it was the offense, and you could see the competitive spirit in them, they were more physical up front.”
Isaiah Chavez who last year was a fifth-string walk-on freshman out of local Rio Rancho High School, came in the last two games of the season with victories over Wyoming and Fresno State also looked sharp too.
Quarterbacks Tevaka Tuioti (concussion) and Brandt Hughes (shoulder) have not been cleared to practice.
QB Milacek (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) continues to learn this Warehime offense as the third-string quarterback.

He led Boulder Creek to the state semifinals in the top division in the fall, finishing with 1,285 passing yards with two interceptions and 632 rushing yards, scoring 10 rushing TD’s and throwing for another 10.
Offensive Coordinator Derek Warehime was asked for comment on the offense; “Trae is predominantly running with the 1st team and Isaiah is predominantly running with the 2nd team. Bear is getting about one series per day.”
“Trae had his best day on Saturday. He only made one bad decision with the football in the scrimmage, the rest of the day he played really well. He kept us in good plays, made good decisions with the ball & did a nice job of standing in the pocket & threw the ball with confidence.”
“Offensively we had a solid week of practice. We are doing a better job of taking care of the football & our level of physicality is improving. “
“There were a number of offensive players that made some big time plays last week in practice. Mannie, Jace, Elijah, Andrew, & Kyle Jarvis all made plays in the passing game”
“Our RB’s are playing really good football right now. Bobby Cole is doing a phenomenal job leading. Chad Alexander is playing really well. Bobby Wooden & Aaron Dumas are showing up more & more each day.
“Our offensive line was impressive on Saturday. Cade Briggs & Austin Cook have been the most consistent this spring. Isaak Gutierrez & Ben Davis have been solid. Leke Asenuga, Jer’Marques Bailey & Radson Jang have been pleasant surprises. It will be great to get Kyle Stapley back this summer.” (tore MCL and partial of the other). On Saturday we scored 31 points, had 594 yards of total offense. Ran the ball for 355 yards.
“We still have a lot of growing to do, but we are certainly headed in the right direction”
The Lobos should be a team to keep an eye out for in the fall with 14 Seniors returning and the addition of some young talent that have been added to the roster.
The New Mexico offense is loaded at the running back position this year and should help them move the chains and score more points.
When you combine a Rocky Long defense that just flat out plays physical and a very smart offensive team under Derek Warehime, it should be a recipe for more wins for the Lobos this year.
If you listen to the local sports radio stations, and just the general buzz around the Duke city, Lobo fans should come out in droves for this Lobo football team.
The excitement level with the hire of local Danny Gonzales, the return of Rocky Long as defensive coordinator and throw in an exciting offense under Derek Warehime, you have a buzz in the city that should fill the stadium with higher ticket sales.
The Lobos spring game will take place this weekend on April 3.
