How Can New Mexico Send Their Seniors Off With A Win?
New Mexico will play their final home game of the 2017 season when they host the UNLV Rebels. The Lobos are coming off a 55-14 blowout loss to the Texas A&M Aggies, the team’s fifth consecutive loss, while the Rebels are coming off a 21-31 loss to BYU and will be looking to win out for the rest of the season to become bowl eligible. Here are some keys to victory for New Mexico on senior night.
1). Give Lamar Jordan the green light for the entire game. The Lobos will not be able to participate in a bowl game this season, so New Mexico will just be playing for pride. With this being the 5th-year senior’s last home game in New Mexico, coach Bob Davie should send off Jordan with the start. Jordan has played his best ball when they stick to the triple option. Giving Jordan the bulk of the work load during this game should put New Mexico in the best spot to win on senior night.
2). Go back to the basics and play smart football. The Lobos have had a very sloppy 2017 season, ranking towards the bottom of the nation in turnovers. Turnovers and boneheaded mistakes will dismantle a team in any sport, but if the Lobos want to finish the home schedule on a high note, they must have a goose egg in the turnover column.
3). Play much better defense against the pass. The Lobos have showed minimal presence against the deep ball, allowing an average of 275 yards through the air during their five-game skid. With the Rebels being a pass-heavy team, the New Mexico secondary must play tighter man-to-man coverage in order to create positive plays for their defense.
4). Pull a bunny out of the hat. With a win or a loss not meaning much from a conference standings point of view, the Lobos can take chances with a few trick plays. New Mexico could use this game as an opportunity to give their home fans a nice show with some fake punts, onside kicks, and other trick plays to give their team a much-needed spark.
5). Play with some intensity. UNLV will be going into this meeting in hopes to become bowl eligible. If the Lobos decide to lay back and play lackadaisical football, the Rebels could send the Lobo seniors packing with their tails tucked between their legs. New Mexico must play like there is something on the line and not allow UNLV to walk out with an easy win.
