New Mexico Will Not Play In A Bowl Game

New Mexico got blown out by Texas A&M 14-55 on Saturday night. With this loss, New Mexico has lost five straight games and has fallen to (3-7, 1-4) on the year. The Lobos found themselves down just 28 seconds into the game when Aggie quarterback Nick Starkel hit wide receiver Christian Kirk on a 60-yard bomb to go up 6-0. With struggling to find any form of offense, the Lobos would find themselves down 48-7 at halftime. With a lackluster rushing attack against a powerful Aggie front seven, New Mexico could not sustain any drives on offense.

New Mexico had no luck in trying to stop Starkel, the redshirt freshman passed for 416 yards on 21-30 throwing and four touchdown passes. Lobo quarterback Lamar Jordan went four for nine for 15 yards and an interception. Quarterbacks Tevaka Tuioti and Coltin Gerhart also saw some action in the blow-out loss. Lobo running back Tyrone Owens lead the way running the ball for 58 yards on 18 carries.

A weak point to New Mexico this season has been their poor pass defense. The Lobos have been vulnerable to the deep ball in every game they have played. The Aggies exploited this early and often with having three different wide outs catch the ball for over 100 yards. Aggie wide receiver Christian Kirk had a field day, catching four passes for 120 yards and a touchdown, to go along with a 90-yard punt return.

With failing to win Saturday, the Lobos will not play in a bowl game for the first time in three years. With some recent allegations made against New Mexico head coach Bob Davie, his future with the program could hang in the balance. The Lobos will have their final home game of the 2017 season next Friday when they take on the UNLV Rebels.
