Nevada Outlasts Fresno State on the road.
A week after the Nevada Wolf Pack got embarrassed on the road against the Lobos of New Mexico, they hit the road to California’s Central Valley to face another tough opponent, the Fresno State Bulldogs.
This time, the Wolf Pack were not going to be deterred as they got a strong game from Jordan Caroline as Nevada defeated Fresno State 74-64. This is the Wolf Pack’s fourth straight victory over Fresno State and Nevada’s second straight victory over Fresno State at Save Mart Center.
Caroline had himself a night in Fresno as he scored 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the Wolf Pack outrebounded the Bulldogs by a count of 43-34. The Wolf Pack grabbed more offensive rebounds (17) than Fresno State (seven) as that was one of the differences in the Wolf Pack securing the victory.
The Wolf Pack had a big edge in second chance points as the Nevada lead in that category by a count of 27-3. Despite Nevada only shooting 38 percent from the field tonight, it was the stellar performance on the offensive rebounding front and those second-chance points really propelled Nevada to the win tonight in Fresno.
Not only did Caroline have an impressive performance for the Wolf Pack tonight but Caleb Marin stepped up as well. Martin led the Wolf Pack in points chipping in with 27 points ( 8-20 from the field) and nine rebounds. Jazz Johnson came off the bench for Nevada tonight and contributed with ten points in the winning effort.
After a back and forth contest throughout the first half, the Wolf Pack did take a 37-32 point lead going into the half. In the second half, the Wolf Pack was able to extend their lead to as many as ten points thanks to the Wolf Pack dominating the offensive glass and getting those second-chance points. Fresno State did give one last push as a Braxton Huggins layup cut Nevada’s lead to 69-64 with 2:09 left in the game.
But that was a close as Fresno State got as the Wolf Pack clamped down on defense and made their free throws as they were able to get the victory. For Fresno State, Huggins led the Bulldogs in scoring with 25 points, while Deshon Taylor contributed with 16 points and Nate Grimes score 15 points tonight for Fresno State.
With the win, the Wolf Pack improve their overall record to 16-1 and their conference record to 3-1. The Wolf Pack will head up to Boise, Idaho to face off against the Boise State Broncos on Tuesday night.
