The Wolf Pack dominated from beginning to end as they avenged their only loss of the season by waxing New Mexico 91-62.
Nevada’s Win Streak Is At Nine As They Thumped the Lobos 91-62
Back on January 5th, the Nevada Wolf Pack were blasted by New Mexico 85-58 in Albuquerque. It was Nevada’s only loss this season and the sting of that loss to the Lobos has fueled the Wolf Pack to win eight straight games since that loss and with New Mexico coming to Reno for the rematch, the Wolf Pack looked to rectify their only loss this season against the visiting Lobos.
In front of 11,197 Wolf Pack fans in attendance, the Wolf Pack got their revenge in convincing fashion. Nevada took the Lobos to the woodshed as the sixth-ranked Wolf Pack demolished New Mexico 91-62. The 29 point beatdown Nevada gave to New Mexico was one point shy of the 30 point beatdown, the Lobos gave to the Wolf Pack more than a month ago.
Similar to that game, the Wolf Pack played exceptionally well from the start as they led the Lobos 25-4 early in the game and never looked back as the Wolf Pack sailed to their ninth straight victory. The win today over New Mexico was Nevada’s 15th straight home victory which is three wins shy of the school record for consecutive wins at home.
The Wolf Pack won this game playing great team defense as they limited New Mexico to just 33.8 percent shooting from the field and on offense, the Wolf Pack had balance scoring as all five of Nevada’s starters scored in double figures.
With the revelation of the projected top 16 seeds for the NCAA tournament early on Saturday, the Wolf Pack were projected as a #4 seed in the South Region so it is important for the Wolf Pack to keep winning and win in convincing fashion. The impressive victory over New Mexico will go a long way to help Nevada’s cause to move up to either a #3 or #2 seed come Selection Sunday.
For the Wolf Pack today, Caleb Martin and Trey Porter both scored 20 points in the winning effort. Porter’s 20 points was a season high for the Old Dominion transfer as he also grabbed nine rebounds today. Jordan Caroline notched another double-double as he chipped in with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Cody Martin also scored 13 points and talled seven assists this afternoon. Jazz Johnson came off the bench for Nevada and scored 13 points this afternoon and hit the 1,000 career points mark for his career.For the Lobos, Makuach Maluach was the leading scorer as he tallied 19 points tonight to go along with seven rebounds. He was the lone bright spot for New Mexico this afternoon.
With the win, the Lobos improve their record to 23-1 overall and 10-1 in the Mountain West. The Lobos record drops to 10-13 overall and 4-7 in Mountain West conference play.
The Wolf Pack will return to action next Saturday as they travel to Laramie to face off against Wyoming.
