Wolf Pack’s Cody Martin “Doubtful” For Big Matchup Against Boise State

The Nevada Wolf Pack may be without their best player when they square off against Boise State on Saturday.

Forward Cody Martin is dealing with an Achilles sprain which he suffered last Saturday against Utah State. This sprain kept him out of the San Jose State game on Wednesday night and from the words of Wolf Pack head coach Eric Musselman, he may not play on Saturday when the Wolf Pack hosts Boise State in the battle for first place atop the Mountain West standings.

“Not going to practice today not going to practice Friday, not going to do shootaround and we’ll warm him up Saturday and see how he feels,” Musselman said on Thursday as per Chris Murray of the Reno Gazette Journal.

Martin is averaging 13 points a game this season to go along with him averaging six rebounds, three assists, and one block per game. Martin is leading the team in field goal shooting at 53 percent and he is the team’s best defender.

If Martin cannot play on Saturday, it will be a big loss for a Wolf Pack team playing against a talented Boise State team that is led by Chandler Hutchison who leads the Mountain West in scoring at 19.6 points per game. If Martin were to play at 100 percent, Martin would more than likely be defending Hutchinson.

Something to also consider as well with the Cody Martin injury, if he is out for the Boise State game, chances are that he will most likely be out for Nevada’s next game when the Wolf Pack go on the road to play Wyoming.

I just don’t see how in three days, an Achilles is going to get better”, Musselman said. “If he doesn’t play against Boise, I doubt he’ll play against Wyoming because then we’ll have a week off and then we think he’d be ready to go down the stretch. That’s kind of medically what we’re thinking right now.”

Should Martin be unavailable for the Boise State game on Saturday, Martin’s offensive production will be missed but most importantly, Martin’s defensive talents will be missed. Martin is a plus individual defender for the Wolf Pack and given how talented a player Hutchison is for Boise State, Martin will be missed. The Wolf Pack will have to collectively step up their defensive prowess on Saturday against Boise State.
