The title game is set.
After some uncertainty about how the Mountain West Conference’s rules on hosting rights for its football championship game would be resolved, we now know the when and the where of this year’s title bout.
The San Jose State Spartans will host the Boise State Broncos at Sam Boyd Stadium next Saturday at 2:15 PM MT/1:15 PM, with a national television audience on FOX. SJSU will play its second straight game at UNLV’s old home field because of ongoing protocols in California’s Santa Clara County, where CEFCU Stadium is located, that are part of an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the area.
Before the Spartans arrived in town last week, Sam Boyd Stadium had been the home of the New Mexico Lobos for most of the 2020 season after similar restrictions throughout the state of New Mexico kept the team from practicing and playing on its own field.
In its news released about the announcement, the Mountain West noted that San Jose State had earned the right to host the game despite its unusual circumstances because of its higher standing in the composite of computer rankings (though it was not noted which computer rankings were utilized to make this determination). The Spartans will take aim at the first outright conference title since 1990, while the Broncos will look to make it five titles in ten years.
