Title game is here.
Utah State is going on the road to take on San Diego State for the Mountain West title in an unexpected matchup between two teams that were not predicted to be in this position.
This is a matchup that will feature MW Wire’s defensive player of the year in Cameron Thomas going up against a Utah State offense that can be very explosive at times with QB Logan Bonner consistently finding WR Deven Thompkins down the field.
The Aztecs defense was top 10 in the nation giving up just 17.3 points per game and that is something the Utah State offense will need to eclipse if they want to win this game.
The Aggies rushing offense has taken a dive with Calvin Tyler, Jr. falling off from his midseason success with an injury. He has played the past few weeks but he has not been the same. Getting a good ground game will open up things for Thompkins who is a threat even against this San Diego State secondary. No ground game likely means that the Aggies don’t have a great chance to win this game.
From our Aztecs key to victory:
If the Aztecs can disrupt Bonner’s ability to pass effectively the Aggies will struggle to move down the field. Bonner is one of the very best quarterbacks in the Mountain West, and under normal circumstances, he is an excellent passer. With aggressive 3-3-5 Aztecs defense coming at him again and again and again, he may fail to connect at his normal frequency, and he may also be jarred into tossing a few interceptions.
