Two MW bowl games are out

The Mountain West is now down two bowl games as the Los Angeles Bowl announced that it will not be putting on its 2020 game, which would have been its first. The Hawaii Bowl is the other one that is not happening this year, also the New Mexico Bowl is moving to Texas this year.

This is the bowl game that replaced the Las Vegas Bowl for the Mountain West, and its top team would have gone on to play a middle of the road Pac-12 team.

This is a big blow for the conference as this game was likely to be the highest payout among the games so there is a financial hit, plus there is the fact of not being able to play a Power 5 team.

This now gives the conference just four tie-ins:

  • Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. MAC, Boise, Idaho
  • New Mexico Bowl vs. C-USA, Albuquerque, N.M.
  • NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl vs. MAC, Tucson, Ariz.
  • Tropical Smoothie Café Frisco Bowl vs. AAC, C-USA, AAC

There are lots of open bowl options with no tie-ins this year but with many bowl games getting canceled, mostly from the Pac-12 which has lost multiple bowl games.

Bowl bids in the Mountain West were already going to be lower than normal but now it is even fewer. Expect the two teams in the title game which is among Boise State, Nevada, or San Jose State. Then look for Fresno State and San Diego State, plus maybe Air Force to be next in line for the Mountain West tie-ins.

There could still be more bowl bids for the Mountain West if at-large bowls decide to make that move, but odds are the tie-ins from Power 5 leagues will take one of their teams since every school is bowl eligible.
