Larry Nance, Jr. dunking is something Wyoming and Mountain West fans are very accustomed to and have seen him toss it down in Laramie for year. The third-year Los Angeles Laker is finally participating in the dunk contest.

He has had plenty of highlight dunks in the NBA.

Nance is going up against Indiana Pacers Victor Oladipo, Orlando Magic’s Aaron Gordon, and Dennis Smith Jr., of the Dallas Mavericks.

The dunk contest takes place on Saturday Feb. 17 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and perhaps with All-Star weekend being in Los Angeles is a reason why Nance decided to participate.

Nance sent out a cryptic tweet that was possibly about the dunk contest.

Nance has a legit shot to win this thing and what would make it even more special is that his father, Larry Nance, was the first ever NBA slam dunk champion back in 1984. That year he beat the likes of Julius Erving, Clyde Drexler, Michael Cooper, Dominique Wilkins and others.

For those unaware here are the rules for the dunk contest.

In the two-round event, participants can perform any dunk they choose.  The players have a maximum of three attempts to complete each dunk in both the first round and the final round.  Five judges score every dunk on a scale of 6 to 10, resulting in a high score of 50 and a low score of 30.

All four competitors get two dunks in the first round.  The two players with the highest combined score for their two dunks advance to the head-to-head final round.  The player with the highest combined score for his two dunks in the final round is crowned the champion.
