Lobos need a new linebackers coach.
The New Mexico Lobo’s coaching shuffle continues as former defensive coordinator and current linebackers coach Kevin Cosgrove decided to take a job at LSU to be its lead defensive analyst.
Cosgrove replaces Mark Criner, who left this offseason to work as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach for the Atlanta Legends in the Alliance of American Football
He spent the past five seasons as defensive coordinator at New Mexico and helped led some improvement of the Lobos defense over those years.
Head coach Bob Davie had high expectations last year going into the season of the Lobo defensive really turning the corner from the previous 3-9 year. That defensive struggled to stop offenses both in the run game and passing games.
This year’s defensive did not live up to Davie’s expectations giving up 36.17 points per game and 473 yards per game. The hope was a switch in the top defensive coach could make the difference going into 2019.
What did not help Cosgrove was some injuries to key defensive player makers senior linebacker Alex Hart and Defensive lineman Trent Sellers. Both received medical redshirts and will be back for the Lobos for 2019.
New Mexico did lose two great defensive players to transfer as outside linebacker Rhashaun Epting who transferred Tennessee State and high octane punt returner Marcus Hayes who landed at Kansas State. Hayes led the nation in punt return average.
Coach Davie promoted from within for the Lobos new defensive coordinator by naming Jordan Peterson to the post, and Davie believes Peterson is a rising star in the coaching ranks in college football.
Peterson was serving as UNM’s defensive pass game coordinator and safeties coach before being promoted by Coach Davie as the new UNM Defensive Coordinator.
Davie would make wholesale changes in his offensive and defensive coordinators after his second 3-9 season.
So, UNM will have both a new offensive coordinator in Joe Dailey, former Liberty Flames offensive coordinator, and Jordan Peterson at the helm as the Lobo’s new defensive coordinator.
