BYU is switching up quarterbacks.

Hawaii’s quarterback issues seem to be fixed on their end with Cole McDonald ready to play against BYU, but the Cougars are making a change under center.

Jay Drew of the Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that true freshman Zach Wilson will get the start over senior Tanner Mangum. Drew also notes that Wilson has been taking the majority of the first-team reps this week.

BYU offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes was vague Wednesday after practice about who will be playing under center. His answer was not exactly glowing in favor of Mangum retaining his job.

Wilson is a former three-star and Boise State commit and was in the running to be BYU’s starter during fall camp but ultimately was named the backup behind Mangum.

The true freshman has seen time this year and so far is 4 of 6 for 54 yards with one touchdown. That score was last week in the final possession for BYU in its 45-20 loss to Utah State.

Wilson will be the seventh true freshman to start a game at quarterback for BYU.

As for how this impacts Hawaii’s game plan on defense, it probably is not really all that much. There is very little film on Wilson outside of his six passes which will give the Cougars an edge, so why change what the team is going to do.

Also, one thing to consider is that Hawaii’s defense has not been all that impressive so it makes sense for BYU to play an inexperienced quarterback up against not the toughest defense. What comes with a true freshman quarterback is mistakes so the edge could swing back to Hawaii.

This game now is full of a bunch of question marks that won’t be answered until Saturday night.
