True freshman could get his first road start.
The good news is that Hawaii football is 6-1 after coming from behind to defeat Wyoming, 17-13. However, they did so without starting quarterback Cole McDonald who did not play due to an unspecified injury.
Chevan Cordeiro started in his place in and was not as explosive as McDonald by completing 19 of 29 passes for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He did connect for a long 38-yard strike to JoJo Ward for the game-winning score.
Even with an outing where Cordeiro’s numbers were not great, Hawaii head coach Nick Rolovich does have a lot of confidence in the freshman signal-caller.
“Chevan Cordeiro almost won the (starting) job in training camp,” Rolovich said via Hawaii Warrior World. “He’s not here for big numbers. He’s here for the smile he’s gonna get from the young kid he sees tomorrow.
“He wants to represent this state with a Warrior jersey. That’s what he told us when he signed. He doesn’t say a lot, but I believe he dreamt about this moment when he put pen to paper.”
He could get another chance to rep Hawaii and start again this Saturday as the Warriors take on old WAC foe in BYU.
As for McDonald’s injury, Rolovich does not seemed to be overly concerned.
The coach said he does not know when McDonald will be available to play again, but added, “It’s not going to be really long term.”
That is good news for a Hawaii team that looked much different offensively against Wyoming. To be fair, the Cowboys are a reall good defensive team that could have made McDonald not look good either.
