From 1-11 to 9-4 and a postseason berth in Hawaii? Not bad at all.

Fresno State came up just short in their first Mountain West football championship game since 2014, but Bulldogs fans can take solace in an early Christmas gift: The team will head to Honolulu for the Hawaii Bowl, its first bowl game in three seasons.

The Houston Cougars didnt quite reach the heights of their 2015 campaign this fall, but the Cougars proved they could be competitive in Major Applewhite’s first season as head coach. They finished 7-4, 5-3 in AAC play, with wins against Navy and South Florida, the latter of which was ranked 17th at the time. Finishing second in the American’s West division was plenty good enough to go bowling for the fifth straight season.

With star defensive tackle Ed Oliver in the trenches and defensive backs Garrett Davis and Terrell Williams chipping in with four interceptions apiece, the Houston defense led the way by allowing just 5.37 yards per play, the second-best figure in the AAC.

It will be the first-ever matchup between Houston and Fresno State. The game will be held on December 24 at 5:30 PM PT and will be on ESPN.
