The Lobos host the Bearkats in Albuquerque
Bob Davie’s Lobo’s start the season against FCS Sam Houston State August 31st in Dreamstyle Stadium in Albuquerque.
More than likely, this will be one of the few games that they will be favored before heading into a very grueling schedule.
New Mexico can ill afford to take any opponent lightly this year as last years 52-43 loss to Liberty proved.
The Bearkats feature two players named to the Hero Sports Preseason team, Nathan Stewart and Zyon McCollum. Stewart, a senior wide receiver, was named to the second team while McCollum, a junior defensive back, was named to the third team.
Stewart who has been one of the most electric receivers in the FCS since joining the Bearkats as a freshman in 2016.
He is one of just four players in FCS history to amass 1,000 receiving yards as a freshman, sophomore and a junior after hauling in 1,063 yards and five scores in 2018.

So he should give New Defensive Coordinator Jordan Peterson’s defensive backfield a great test before heading Notre Dame the following week.
The Lobos gave up an average of 36.2 points per game last season and should be exciting to watch with a very aggressive 3-3-5 defense if spring ball is any indication.
Along with Peterson, Coach Davie brought in Offensive Coordinator Joe Daily from Liberty.
No small task to resurrect the offense that a few years ago dominated most defenses it played against.
Bob Davie is counting on a lot of JC players to step in quickly and make plays to allow the Lobos to be put in a position to win games for this season.
Combine that with a new offensive and defensive coordinator, it makes a whole lot of pieces that will have to fall in place to get back to winning football games in Albuquerque this year.
