What happened Day 2?
Mountain West Madness Day 2 lived up to the name with the first two games going into overtime and three of the lower seeds came out on top to advance to the semfinals. Only Utah State was the higher seed to advance to the semifinals.
- (1) Utah State 87, (8) Fresno State 75 (OT)
The big news of this game was that the Aggies did not have Mason Falslev who missed this game vs. Fresno State and is considered day-to-day for Friday’s semifinal contest.
This game was full of runs that started with Fresno State getting out to a double-digit lead in the first half. Utah State then had their turn for a run and the game went into an extra frame.
Javon Jackson stepped in for Falslev with a great game with 16 points and stepped up in minutes played with 26 minutes.
In overtime, Fresno State went cold and ended up losing by 12 points. Great Osobor led the way with 29 points, 17 rebounds, and what seemingly felt like a million free throw attempts.
- (5) San Diego State 74, (4) UNLV 71 (OT)
Another overtime game in the Mountain West with host UNLV coming up short against San Diego State in a — wink, wink — neutral site game.
Per usual, the Aztecs were down early and needed a comeback to top the Rebels led by the best performance so far in the tournametn as Jaedon LeDee put up 34 points, 16 rebounds, and a key bank shot in overtime to send UNLV packing.
- (7) Colorado State 85, (2) Nevada 78
In another seed upset, Nevada had a sluggish start against Colorado State and that ultimately led to the Wolf Pack’s demise, 85-78. The Nevada loss is the third-straight year that they have failed to make it past this quarterfinal round.
Foul trouble hurt the Wolf Pack early and often which really tested the Nevada depth early and often in this matchup.
Colorado State shot 50% in this game and converted seven timely three-pointers to hold off any Nevada rally in this game.
- ย (6) New Mexico, 76, (3) Boise State 66
The final game of the night was the other upset with New Mexico winning by 10 over Boise State. This is a big win for the Lobos who are seen as a bubble team, and the first team out per ESPN after the conclussion of Thursday’s games.
The Lobos went out to an 11-point first half lead and then played basically even with the Broncos in the second-half. New Mexico’s defense coupled with bad Boise State shooting is how this game was decided. The Lobos had a combined 19 blocks and steals, while the Broncos shot a putrid 29.4% from the field.
