The Wyoming Cowboys are looking to get back on track after two blowout losses to San Diego State. The Colorado State Rams are also looking to get back on track after a loss to Boise State. The Cowboys have a chance to play spoiler for a great Rams season. And the Rams are looking to stay within shouting distance of first place in the Mountain West.
The Cowboys had their three game winning streak snapped with two losses to the Aztecs. And in order to play the spoiler role for the Rams, head coach Jeff Linder told the Casper Star Tribune that the Cowboys must match the Rams level of intensity and physicality. They even got some bulletin board material due to CSU head coach Niko Medved jokingly saying he hoped his team wouldn’t get stuck in Laramie.
Wyoming are currently led by MW Freshman of the Year candidate Marcus Williams. Williams is currently averaging 16.3 ppg and is dishing out 4.1 assists per game. He is joined in double figures by Hunter Maldonado (12.3 ppg) and Kwane Marble II (10.3 ppg). Wyoming will be missing the impact Kenny Foster brought to the court after being he was declared out indefinitely due to a knee injury suffered against Nevada.
Colorado State is looking to keep pace with the top of the Mountain West and secure their at large resume for the NCAA tournament. While David Roddy is currently leading the Rams in scoring (16 ppg, 9.3 rpg), Isaiah Stevens is the Rams leader on the court. Stevens is currently averaging 15.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg, and 6.6 apg (which leads the Mountain West). Kendle Moore joins Roddy and Stevens in double figures with 10.7 ppg.
We can debate stats and rankings all day and night, but this is a rivalry game and we can throw those out debates out of the window. Anything can happen here. Wyoming upset CSU last year in the abridged MW tournament. If the Cowboys can keep up with the Rams physicality and intensity this should be an interesting two-game series.
Prediction: Colorado State 76, Wyoming 69 (02/04); Colorado State 81, Wyoming 77 (02/06)
Next Up: The Rams will head back home to hopefully host the New Mexico Lobos on February 9th and 11th. Wyoming will head on the road as they head to Logan to face Utah State on February 10th and 12th.
