To say it’s been an up and down year for Boise State basketball might be an understatement.
Boise State enters Saturday’s matchup with Pac-12 power Oregon with a 4-5 record and has been one of the more disappointing teams in the Mountain West in the early going.
The Broncos stumbled in the season opener against Idaho State and also has losses to Illinois State, Drake, and Grand Canyon. Even when Leon Rice’s club has won, last year’s Mountain West runner-up has been anything but impressive. Sub-300 teams like Jackson State and Alabama State and even D-II Central Washington have made things interesting against Boise State.
Now the Broncos have to go on the road to one of the most hostile environments in America to play a star-studded yet somewhat underperforming Oregon squad. The Ducks started the season ranked No. 14 in the AP poll, but some surprising hiccups have caused Dana Altman’s team to fall out of the poll.
Oregon still has potential to be one of the nation’s top teams and a legitimate contender to make it deep in the NCAA Tournament if things come together. Boise State will have its hands full defending Bol Bol, an absolute freak of nature at 7-2, and also Payton Pritchard, one of the better lead guards in the country.
Oregon and Boise State have had some instant classics lately, so don’t be surprised if the Broncos hang around and make this interesting. On paper, however, this is certainly a mismatch that favors the home team.
