Being a quarterback at Boise State comes with exceedingly high expectations, but Taylen Green passed just about every test thrown at him this fall and walked away with our staff’s nod as Mountain West football’s freshman of the year.
Green took on the starting role in late September, making his first career start in a home win against San Diego State, and it didn’t take him long to find his footing. The Broncos would lose just one game the rest of the year and ran away with the Mountain division crown thanks in large part to Green’s efforts, as he finished 2022 by completing 136-of-212 passes for 1,730 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions.
He also made his mark as a runner from the get-go, too, rushing for 102 yards against Oregon State and 105 against the Aztecs before finishing the season with 437 yards on the ground altogether, including six rushing touchdowns. Among a program that has developed greats like Kellen Moore and Brett Rypien, Taylen Green looks well-suited to be the next Boise State legend under center.

Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State (26 points)
The Broncos finished 1-2 in this year’s freshman of the year vote for good reason. Jeanty, a four-star recruit from Texas, proved to be a strong complement to veteran running back George Holani, finishing 2022 with 611 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 121 carries. He also chipped in with 12 catches for 148 yards, as well.
Clay Millen, QB, Colorado State (16 points)
Battered and beaten, but never down for the count. Despite missing some time with injuries in 2022, Millen kept swinging anytime he was under center for the Rams and ended up setting a new FBS record for completion percentage by a freshman quarterback. His 72.2% rate led the Mountain West and he threw for 1,910 yards and ten touchdowns against six interceptions in 11 games.
