A quarterback change is often one of the toughest things with which any college football can deal, but Boise State’s Taylen Green made a difficult situation into a productive one to earn our staff’s first ever nod as Mountain West football’s breakout player of the year.
Green came on in relief of then-starter Hank Bachmeier in the Broncos’ season-opening loss against Oregon State, but wouldn’t see much action again until after Bachmeier left the team and offensive coordinator Tim Plough was ousted in late September. Under the tutelage of interim coordinator Dirk Koetter, however, the redshirt freshman from Lewisville, Texas thrived: In 11 total games, Green completed 64.2% of his passes for 1,730 yards and 12 touchdowns against an interception rate of 1.9%.
If that wasn’t enough, he also made some timely contributions with his legs. After running for over 100 yards in that season opener versus the Beavers, Green would finish the year with an average of 7.16 yards per carry and eight rushing touchdowns, including a program-record 91-yard scoring run in the season finale against Utah State.
Needless to say, anyone outside of Idaho who was waiting on the program’s demise will probably need to wait another few years since Taylen Green’s ceiling appears to be quite high.

Jalen Mayden, QB, San Diego State (31 points)
Green wasn’t the only quarterback to step up in the Mountain West this season. Mayden took over for the Aztecs when injuries and ineffectiveness forced a change and he had one of the team’s best individual seasons in recent memory, completing 62.9% of his passes for 1,721 yards with ten touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Doug Brumfield, QB, UNLV (29 points)
After a brief dalliance with the transfer portal last off-season, Brumfield decided to stay in Las Vegas. That paid off after he won the starting quarterback job in fall camp and played like one of the most dynamic athletes in the Mountain West when healthy, with a 64.6% completion rate, 1,898 passing yards, and sixteen combined touchdowns on the ground and through the air.
