Aztecs Defeat Lobos 35-10, Superstar Penny Explodes Past 2,000 Rush Yards

San Diego State played at home at the SDCCU Stadium in front of a crowd of 28,978, and soundly defeated the visiting New Mexico Lobos 35-10 in what will be a bittersweet  regular season-ender for the elite Mountain West program.  Bittersweet, because after two Pac-12 wins and a 10-2 record, the Aztecs will not contend for a third straight Mountain West Championship.

The game never left the Aztecs’ control.  The Lobos did manage to score a TD and a field goal to show signs of life during the second half.  The Lobos also managed to display their frustrations through a number of unproductive penalties off heated exchanges throughout the game.

Rashaad Penny, the Aztecs’ juggernaut running back, and your 2017 FBS rushing leader, electrified the gridiron fresh off of an historic snub by the Doak Walker committee, handling the stunning news with grace.  For the game he managed to produce 203 rushing yards on 22 runs and scored two touchdowns.

During the third quarter, Rashaad Penny became the 23rd player in FBS history to exceed the single-season 2,000 yard rush mark.  He crossed the line during a 51-yard run for TD that put the Aztecs up at one point 21-0 . Penny ended the game with 19 touchdowns for the year, and he is currently tied with the FBS record at seven career kickoff returns for touchdown.

Last night’s game was Penny’s fourth straight 200-yard game and his fifth of the season. He ended the game with 2,027 yards, and now has 2016 NCAA all-time rushing leader and former teammate Donnel Pumphrey’s single season record of 2,133 yards in sight.

In their win against New Mexico, San Diego State posts its first ever third straight ten- win season, with the possibility of an eleventh win.  Furthermore, San Diego State became the first college football team to produce two running backs in two seasons to exceed 2,000 rushing yards.

The Aztecs are going bowling this year, and many speculate they will make an appearance at the Cactus Bowl, but details are yet to be announced.

Congratulations to Rashaad Penny for his outstanding achievement.
