What to watch for:
The Wolf Pack will try to move to 3-0 after opening the first week of the season with 2 home wins against BYU and Pacific. The Arkansas Little Rock Trojans, from the Sun Belt Conference, have also begun their season with 2 victories. While on paper this looks like it should be an easy game for Nevada it would be a grave mistake to overlook the Trojans.
Trojans first-year head coach Darrell Walker has an impressive resume as a player and coach. Walker played 10 seasons in the NBA and was head coach of the Toronto Raptors and the Washington Wizards. The Trojans play a face paced high scoring game, averaging 92 points per game through the first 2 games, led by 5-8 Freshman guard Markquis Nowell, Nowell, a top 40 point guard recruit according to Rivals, made an immediate impact scoring 34 pts and dishing out 8 assists in their opening game.
This will be a good test for Nevada’s defense as the Trojans are 7th in the country in field goal percentage. Shooting under 41% from the floor their first 2 games Nevada will try to putting it’s poor shooting woes behind them. The Wolf Pack did get their 3 point shooting going against Pacific which was a relief for the Lawlor faithful as well as the Coaching staff.
Look for Nevada to continue to go 9 players deep in their rotation as coach Eric Musselman tries to meld 6 new players with the returning trio of Jordan Caroline, Caleb, and Cody Martin. Caleb has yet to score in the first half this season only to explode offensively in the 2nd half of both games. Cody has immersed himself in the role of point guard and has recorded double digit assists in each of the first 2 games of the season. Caroline is playing like, well like Jordan Caroline, and has adapted well to the move to the 3 position.
Jazz Johnson and Tre’Shawn Thurman are looking comfortable on the court with Johnson providing much needed shooting from downtown and Thurman doing a little bit of everything. Jordan Brown played much better against Pacific but has had some trouble converting after contact as has the other Nevada big Trey Porter, going a combined 7-18 from the field. Still looking for breakout games are 2 other transfers, Nisre Zouzoua and Cory Henson.
This game should provide another good opportunity to develop better on the court chemistry. The new look Wolf Pack have begun to establish their identity as a hard nosed team that isn’t afraid to dive after loose balls and on the offensive side having a plethora of weapons inside and out. A fun matchup to watch will be Nowell vs. Johnson, 2 undersized but quick and fearless guards.
