The best Falcons players ever, in the Mountain West.

The Mountain West is 20 years in and with that being a milestone year we decided to look back at the league and do a lot of cool stuff including creating the ultimate two-deep.

We are going alphabetically with current teams and then do **gasp** BYU, TCU, and Utah at the end. Going through and creating the list our writers could use any criteria they liked.

So, it could be All-American awards, all-conference, career stats or season-long stats especially for teams that had players who played in the WAC and then came into the Mountain West.

We also include coaches and most outstanding offensive, defensive and special teams players.

Coach

Troy Calhoun – He took over for the legendary Fisher DeBerry who did coach in the Mountain West but the Hall of Fame coach was on the downswing at the turn of the century and led the Falcons to just a pair of bowl games and four winning seasons from 1999-2006.

Calhoun gets the nod because he did more than DeBerry from 2007 to date with an appearance in the conference title game, nine bowl games in 12 years, and a pair of 10 win seasons.

Most outstanding offensive player

Shaun Carney, QB (2007) – This was a tough choice because the Falcons had a co-Mountain West player of the year in 2000 with Mike Thiessen but despite being the conferences best player he did not make the cut as the best team overall.

Carney was a true dual-threat quarterback for Air Force between 2004-07 in which he played 46 games as a four-year starter and led all Falcons quarterbacks in passing yards, completion percentage among QB’s, touchdowns and in this 20-year era was third in rushing touchdowns and third in rushing amongst all players.

Most outstanding defensive player

Weston Steelhammer, DB (2016) – Despite having one of the best names ever in college football history, Steelhammer was one heck of a player known for making plays.

He was a first-team All-Mountain West selection three times, 18 total interceptions, recovered three fumbles and for a defensive back accumulated 21 tackles for loss and five sacks.

Steelhammer was always all over the field making plays and seemingly was always involved in every single play.

Most outstanding special teams player

Luke Strebel (2017) – Strebel is the most prolific kicker in Falcons history plus he punted his freshman year. He has the most points ever with 254, second in field goal percentage at 85.4 percent — while making 11 more than our second-team all-time kicker Will Conant who was slightly more accurate at 88.2 percent — and made all 131 extra-point attempts which was 40 more made than second place.
