Flying high in the preseason.
Mountain West football is about to get spring practices underway and men’s basketball has seen some epic races to the top, but baseball season kicks off soon, too, as evidenced by the release of the Golden Spikes Award watchlist, given annually to the nation’s top amateur baseball player.
55 players were named to this year’s preseason list, an honor which has previously been won by the likes of Buster Posey, Kris Bryant, and Bryce Harper, but it features just one name from the Mountain West: Air Force infielder Sam Kulasingam. After making 19 starts as a freshman in 2021, the Holly Springs, North Carolina native broke out big time for a Falcons team which won the conference tournament and made its first NCAA regional appearance since 1969. In 61 contests, Kulasingam led the Mountain West with a .411 average and 109 hits while finishing second with a 1.170 OPS and fifth with 61 runs batted in.
The honor comes just one day after the Mountain West also named him to the preseason all-conference team and about a week after Kulasingam was named a third-team all-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Last year’s Golden Spikes Award winner was Texas’s Ivan Melendez.
