A lot of lower seeds left

Only one of the top four seeds in the Mountain West tournament that is left is regular season and No. 1 seeded Utah State. The rest are Nos. 5, 6 and 7. Do not be fooled, as any of those teams can win the rest of the tournament.

This conference is getting at least five bids to the NCAA Tournament, so any of these teams can advance and move on.

The Aggies take on San Diego State in a must-watch game — honestly, this could be the best two teams in the tournament and the best contest — as this winner should be a big favorite to win the tournament on Saturday afternoon,

If the Aggies are going to win, they might be short-handed with freshman guard Mason Falslev suffering an injury that kept him out of the quarterfinals win over Fresno State.

SEMIFINALS, MARCH 15

All semifinal games are all on CBS Sports Network or stream on FuboTV with a free trial

Head coach Danny Sprinkle is not overly optimistic about Falslev’s chances.

“He hasn’t really practiced much all week,” Sprinkle warned. “We’ll see how he feels tomorrow. He’s been getting a lot of treatment on it, but I don’t expect him to play tomorrow.”

The Aggies are safely in the NCAA Tournament and are just playing for seeding now.

San Diego State is beyond a dangerous team as they are coming off a national title appearance last year, but they have struggled away from home this year. These two teams split the season series and the Aztecs own an all-time record of 19-9 over the Aggies.

The big story in this game is going to be the matchup of dueling players of the year between Utah State’s Great Osobor who was chosen by the coaches and San Diego State’s Jaedon LeDee who was the media’s vote.

The late game is No. 6 New Mexico vs. No. 7 Colorado State and this game is basically a must-win for both teams to make it to the NCAA’s. The Rams are more secure with an average seed of nine, while the Lobos are on the bubble and need this win a little bit more.

The Rams offense has sputtered a lot this year and has not been overly dynamic, but they turned that around — at least for one night in Las Vegas — with 85 points against Nevada.

The last time that Colorado State scored more than 80 points was in 2023 back on Dec. 29.

New Mexico used its defense to upend Boise State with seven blocked shots and 10 steals in the victory. The Lobos will need that type of effort once again if the Colorado State offense has plans to go off for a big game.

ODDSMAKERS

The oddsmakers for these semifinal games are not liking the No. 1 seed chances to win it all. Utah State is given the smallest percentage to win the conference tournament, per TeamRankings.

The Aggies being at the bottom is not too surprising as all these teams are left and Utah State is down a key player with Falslev likely out. Seeing them at the bottom is a shock a bit as the seeds left after Utah State are five, six, and seven.

These advanced metrics like a San Diego State and New Mexico title game and are virtually tied with 31% to win it all. This just shows that the conference tight and both games are sort of a toss up, with neither favorites San Diego State or New Mexico cracking a 60% point mark to advance to the title game.
