The stars will be out in Pasadena.

We’re well on our way down the path to the NFL Draft at this point, which will reach another checkpoint this weekend with this year’s edition of the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl at the fabled Rose Bowl.

Seven Mountain West football players from four different teams will suit up and hope to make a strong impression. Interestingly, most of that group set to participate have already found measures of success on the very same turf over the past few seasons: San Diego State, which defeated UCLA in Pasadena back in 2019, has three players representing the program while Fresno State, who beat the Bruins last September, has two.

Aztecs safety Trenton Thompson anchored a reloading secondary for the Aztecs in 2021 and made his last season of eligibility the best one overall, picking up 44 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss while defending a team-high 14 passes (including three interceptions). Linebacker Segun Olubi appeared in 21 games for San Diego State over the past two years, including six starts in the first half of 2021, and finished last season with 53 total tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks. Running back Greg Bell battled injuries throughout his two years with the team but proved to be one of the Mountain West’s most potent runners when healthy, finishing his Aztecs career with 1,735 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 360 attempts.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, are represented by DaRon Bland and Arron Mosby. After transferring to Fresno State from FCS Sacramento State, Bland emerged as the team’s top cornerback with 45 tackles, five passes defended and two interceptions. Mosby, on the other hand, played in a number of roles for the ‘Dogs over the course of his collegiate career, moving from safety to linebacker to defensive end and breaking out in the last role last year with 15.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, and six forced fumbles.

Air Force’s Jordan Jackson helped the Falcons build a stout defense throughout the course of his career, collecting 27 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks in three seasons as a defensive end (he sat out the 2020 season after taking a turnback). Lastly, Boise State defensive back Kekaula Kaniho leaves the blue as one of the team’s most impactful and versatile players in recent memory, finishing his Broncos career with 207 total tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss and 24 passes defended (including six interceptions) in 57 games.

The 2022 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl will be broadcast on the NFL Network this Saturday, January 29, beginning at 3:00 PM PT/4:00 PM MT.
