UNM vs. HBU

The 2021 Lobo season opener for second-year head UNM coach Danny Gonzales as the football team will take place in Albuquerque on September 2nd on a Thursday night game against Houston Baptist.

This will be the homecoming game that Gonzales did not get in 2020 when Covid-19 hit and threatened to cancel the Lobo season entirely.

The MWC and UNM would come up with an all-league schedule and the Lobos would relocate to Las Vegas, Nevada, and finish 2-5 on the season in an exciting fashion by claiming victory on their final two games.

The Lobos will play four non-conference games before they go to eight league contest and will pay Houston Baptist $385,000 for their first game of the year in Albuquerque and receive themselves $1.1 million on Sept. 18th when they play at Texas A&M.

Especially after the Lobos became the first Division I football team to play an entire season outside of its home state, your Lobos are back in New Mexico and ready to play in front of the Lobo faithful!

Well, this has to be one of the most highly anticipated Lobo Football seasons in years with less than three months before opening kickoff at University Stadium.

When the Lobos kick off their home opener against Houston Baptist on September 2nd at University Stadium, it will have been 642 days between home games for Lobo Football and for its fans.

It will also be the first time that Lobo fans will be able to cheer on a team in person led by Head Coach Danny Gonzales.

The former Lobo player and assistant coach is looking forward to running out of the University Stadium tunnel and leading the team he grew up watching and idolizing onto the field.

“Coaching this team and representing our state and community is an absolute privilege,” said Gonzales. “September 2 will be a great celebration for the entire state as Lobo Football returns, and I’m so excited for our fans to be able to come out and celebrate with us.”

The Houston Baptist Huskies are from the Southland Conference and opens the 2021 season with three consecutive non-conference contests, beginning on the road on Thursday, Sept. 2 at Albuquerque against the Lobos.

Houston Baptist played a four-game non-conference football schedule in the fall of 2020 and finished 1-3. The Huskies opted out of competing in the spring 2021 Southland Conference season.
