Late Thanksgiving week San Diego State’s hopes of a Pac-12 matchup were delivered as the Colorado Buffaloes matchup against USC had to be postponed due to COVID concerns. Being that late in the week, no Pac-12 team would be able to fulfill that slot, allowing for San Diego State to play in Boulder.
In previous Mountain West Wire articles, San Diego State’s two-week road trip against Nevada and Fresno State would be the hardest part of the short season. Instead of a rivalry game, going up against a high-octane Colorado program on short notice with little preparation would be the toughest of tasks.
Going into this season, Carson Baker seemed like he was warming up the car for Lucas Johnson, but with Johnson ruled out earlier this week, Baker was again named the starting QB.
Now the valet was handed the keys again and needed to drive as if he stole it. But instead of driving the car, he was the deer in headlights. After going 4/9 in the first half, Baker was relieved in favor of fourth-string QB Jordan Brookshire.
With the insertion of Brookshire into the QB, it was plain to see that the Buffs were going to stack the box and not let the running backs beat them. After preparing for Greg Bell and company for the last 48 hours, there was no doubt they were going to steamroll the offensive line of the Aztecs.
The running game only rushed for 79 yards with Brookshire earning 50 of them.
The Aztec defense had been carrying this team throughout the season, and now they have made it clear that they are the backbone of this team.
The defense gave up 272 yards and kept the Buffaloes out of the end zone in the second half. And CB Darren Hall scored the Aztec’s only touchdown with a pick 6.

With a back-to-back loss and setting up for a December 5 matchup against Colorado State, these guys have blown their transmission. They can start the engine, but that power just keeps turning with nowhere to go.
As a grizzled mechanic would tell you, there’s something but they can’t put their finger on it. The Aztecs are missing even a game manager at the wheel. It’s unclear if bringing Jeff Hecklinski along was a good idea. Because either way, Rocky Long’s recruits are not set up for this style of offense.
The Aztecs have officially become the Mountain West’s 2020 Chicago Bears.
